Pigeon Island in Sri Lanka

Trincomalee, one of the finest natural deep-water harbors in the world is located 260 km out of Colombo. Trincomalee is popular for the excellent beaches of Nilaveli, and off-shore Pigeon Island.

Recently Trincomaleehas become popular as a Whale Watching destination as well. The Dive centers at Nilaveli support the tourists to enjoy their holidays in diving, snorkeling and swimming. Trincomalee district, called Gokanna in the historical records. Gateway to a couple of finest beaches in the eastern coast of Sri Lanka, namely Nilaveli located 16km off the town. Beaches with knee deep shallow waters that runs hundreds of feet into the sea, afford ample opportunities for surfing, scuba diving, fishing and Whale Watching.

The seven hot springs at Kanniyai located just 8km from Trincomalee attract regular crowds throughout the year in view of the beneficial properties of water there varying in temperature from one well to the other.

Pigeon Island is consists of two islands, one is small and other one is larger in size. This is one of the paramount places to see corals.  Pigeon Island, a little rocky island where the blue Rock pigeons variety, and whose waters around are a delight of colorful fishes. Popular with tourists, the island can be reached by boats hired from any of the hotels or from the beach. In year 2003 Pigeon Island was nominated as a nation park in Sri Lanka earlier it was a place of safety.

In our stay at Nilaveli beach, we decided to visit to Pigeon Island. This island can be seen clearly from the breach. There are boat services available from the beach. Life jackets provided and operators said that they comprise of insurance too. This service operates from morning to evening.

It took around 15 minutes to reach the Pigeon Islands. From the Nilaveli beach you see this as a one island, but actually there are two.

The beach is covered with corals and I haven't got that experience in any other beach in Sri Lanka. It's difficult to walk without slippers, because of these corals. Some times departed corals can make sharp cut, which can cause bad disease. Also most of the tourists had sea bath in Pigeon Island. But in my experience for sea bathing Nilaveli beach is the best. Even sand was formed with the crushed corals.

Also we can climb to the rocks to get the view of the envirnment with the fresh ligh breeze. You can see the real owners of the island, the pigeons in the other side of the island. Rarely, you can see the dark patch in the sea water near the beach. Actually it's cluster of small fish moving around the island.

Large number of people visits this island in holidays or seasons. Pigeon Island is under supervision of Sri Lanka Navy and Department of Wildlife Protection. The journey to Pigeon Island is really interesting. This is a significant opportunity I received in my life.
