Waterfalls
are one of the most fascinating natural phenomenons. They are charmed for human
beings. Although Sri Lanka is a tiny island compared to the size, this consists
of largest number of waterfalls. There are 109 waterfalls in Rathnapura
District, 75 in Nuwara Eliya and 40 in Kegalle. Some of the waterfalls have
interesting stories behind with humor. I also have visited some of the
waterfalls pours its way down with a little breeze.
- Diyaluma Waterfall
With an
appearance and location this is the highest waterfall in the island. This
tall and thin "Diyaluma" waterfall pours its way down and flows towards Kirindi Oya below a bridge on
the highway from Beragala to Wellawaya. The scope of water spill
downwards is so great during the rainy season makes alters for the tediously
undisturbed water trunk falling from head to foot with no middle pour at all. Its
geographical location by one of the mostly used Highways on both sides of the
Hill Country to the simply speaks for its reputation not only here but in other
parts of the world as well. This is very interesting waterfall which falls down
and tourists can enjoy the sound of nature.
- Dunhinda Waterfall
"Dunhinda" is one of the habitually
spoken-about waterfalls in Sri Lanka. Although she couldn't come even close
to the highest waterfalls of the earth in height she is a competitor for many
of the waterfall friends. When it comes to the natural beauty that it gives on
the environment and it is situated
about 2 km distance from the main road runs to Taldena from the remote city
Badulla in the Uva Province. This is easily accessible and frequently
visited by local and foreign visitors. On the way can be seen the "Kuda Dunhinda" ( "Kuda"
means small in Sinhala ) which is the initial remarks to its mighty brother .
In native tongue "Dun" means mist which is the ideal explanation for
a waterfall creating covering of mist on its way down.
For visiting the Dunhinda waterfall the visitors
need to walk more than 1 KM in the through the biggest jungle. There are many
small animals as well where the guest can watch. The rarely appearing plant
also can be seen. Along this foot path there are many native venders selling
herbal drinks to refresh and rest yourself. At the end of the path there is a
secure stage constructed for viewers to see the waterfall. If you are brave
enough you can reach the foot of the waterfall and cross the river and see the
most beautiful view of the fall.
- Ravana Ella
This beautiful
waterfall is situated in the Dry zone off Welimada, Sitha Eliya. This is a
continuous stream of life to the villagers as it provides a good deal needed
water for the cultivation of vegetables, their main income. The support role of
this tiny, beautiful waterfall is seen high. While the surrounding mountains
were dirty and dry this particular mountain was greenish and cultivated. It
derives its name from the mythical king Ravana of the great Indian epic The
Ramanya.
- Ramboda Ella Falls
Gigantic
water fall having three parts and very close to the 53km post along the above
A-5 trunk road. The first part is above the road in the jungle (100m), second
part is close to the road (3m) and the third part (100m) is below the road. Traveler
should tumble down to the "Ramboda basin", where the famous
"Ramboda Inn" situated from where guest can see the whole fall.
When we were there the upper part was covered with a fog and what you see in
the picture was the third part. If look carefully, one can notice a smaller
section of the waterfall in the jungle means bit below the road too.
These
waterfalls are very interested and made my life happier by covering through the
water and breeze. I enjoyed the way to all of these waterfalls and paining to
visit the other falls as well in my life.
These are
some of the other waterfalls in Sri Lanka.
Devon Waterfalls
With a
strange appearance conveyed to it by its formation in three continuous falls.
This waterfall’s nickname is "Devon Falls". This pours down to the
valley beneath not a long distance away from its brother the "St.
Clairs". On the main road opposite to it; there is situated a modern tea center finding.
Bopath Fall
Just 15 km
from the Colombo- Ratnapura road, it falls from a height of 100ft into the Kurd
gang river. The shape itself is a rare beauty with a perfectly heart shaped
head, similar to the leaf of the sacred Bo tree, therefore the name Bopath.
Bambarakanda Fall
This is
the highest (241 M) water fall in Sri Lanka. The fall is situated in the
Badulla District, Belihul Oya area. From the Rathnapura - Balangoda road,
turn left for Weerakoon village and continue for 5km to the fall.
