Portfolio
Portfolio is a collection of documents which represents the individuals efforts, achievements, experience in learning. (ukcle.ac,2010)


According to pgcps (2012), the portfolio should include students participation in selected activities with the efforts, evidence of reflection of individuals.


Why is a Portfolio important?
According to Pgcps (2012), this provide rich information about students assess along with with the progress of the work. Helps to get an understand about the growth of the student in a particular timeline.Portfolios can be used for various purposes such as;

•  encouraging self-directed learning
• offering opportunity for the growth 
• shows the progress towards the outcome

Main purposes are to demonstrate professional knowledge, abilities and to emphasize the reflection on the on goals(Portfoliomaker, 2012).

Different Types of Portfolios

1.Working portfolios
This is a project in the work or a progressed/ finished topic of work with the learning objectives. This is evidence to get to know the strengths and weaknesses of the learning outcomes (Melograno,2006,P219).

2.Display portfolios

Demonstrates the highest level of achievements of an individual. This can be maintained each year. (Danielson ,Abrutyn , 1997)

3.Assessment portfolios
This documents individual learning on a specific task.(Danielson ,Abrutyn , 1997)

4. Income portfolio
Focuses on the dividends to stockholders. Generates true cash flows. Real estate investment is a valuable source of income. (Investopeadia , 2012)

Portfolios are in different stylesand may be using for various kinds of  purposes.

Electronic portfolio
In the modern world these are becoming popular as it is a collection of electronic evidence which is managed by a user on the web. This will help to promote independent ways  of thinking. This has the ability to save the private information securely. (Academic.regis, 2012)

According to spectrumpacific (2012), purpose of an e-portfolio is to show the evidence as a document which represents individuals work within a period of time. This provides surveyor a document which indicates information from many sources. Above diagram prescribes the purposes in the feilds of education,personal and employment.

Reflective Portfolio

Based on  Maa (1997), the knoerr, McDonal had expressed that,  this is very useful for students to get an idea about themselves progress in a time period. Helps to identify the interests and workload which has been done in order to progress.To increase the self-responsiveness for the development of the knowledge and this is important to homework,class work, quizzes.


One of the core advantages of a portfolio is the promotion of learner reflection. By using this individuals can understand the weak point and try to adapt good habits (Maa ,1997).


Reflective portfolio is an useful tool in experiential and theoretical learning. This provides students a major opportunity to meet together with each program using the relevant materials.
